Lewis Hamilton recorded the fastest lap of the weekend so far to top the times in the free practice sessions in China. Rosberg came second, improving on his own time when he switched to the options. Michael Schumacher was fourth in FP2, and was as close as he has been to team-mate Rosberg this year. The Ferrari men looked lurid for much of the second session as they worked hard to recover the time Spanish lost this morning, lapping just over 0.3s faster than team-mate Felipe Massa. Fernando Alonso pulled off the circuit in first sesion with what appeared to be another engine failure. Flames was licking from the exhaust ports on the Ferrari. Buemi has spectacular crash, causing a red flag period.

He comented accident:"It looked quite spectacular but from inside the car, it was not so big. Once the car stopped, it took a bit of time to understand what happened, but it was not too bad. Something broke, and it happens. We don't think about it any more. We were working on preparing car for second practice, but we just missed out by a few minutes."

Felipe Massa is reportedly close to securing a three-year extension to his Ferrari F1 agreement, what would tie him down to the famed Scuderia until at least the end of 2013, a season longer than the current deal for double world champion team-mate Fernando Alonso. It is understood that a new deal has already been prepared and will be signed shortly. Alonso is committed to the Italian outfit until at least the end of 2012 and the Spaniard has hinted that he intends to conclude his F1 career there.

Mercedes Grand Prix top brass Norbert Haug and Nick Fry have poured cold water upon speculation that record-breaking multiple world champion Michael Schumacher could bring a premature end to his return to F1 competition, leaping to the defence of the German legend, who they insist remains 'highly-motivated' and focussed on 'long-term' success.

Felipe Massa: Think positive!!!

"Even after a difficult weekend as that of Malaysia, I always try to look on the bright side. Although in practice on Friday and Saturday morning, the F10 was not fastest car on track, but in the race, when I had clear path, our pace was not bad, compared with Red Bull. Furthermore, compared to McLaren is pretty good. In the early stages Lewis, who along with Button, was stuck with us in far end of grid, was able to overcome many cars thanks to its excellent speed peak, which we were not able to follow(Ferari doesn`t have F-duct system). But after a while I was able to reduce the gap to him quite easily. Our race performance is good but we need to improve in qualifying, looking fact that Red Bull has the pole in all three opening races. If we can make progress on this front and that is what we will have to work on in the next races."

"I think our race was virtually over by the end of Q1, Saturday afternoon. In short, we made a big mistake, the team and myself. It was wrong to trust the weather forecast. We went out at the wrong time and we missed the passage in Q2. It was a stupid strategic choice and we can learn from what' s happened and try not to repeat it future. When you are last on the grid and there are twenty cars in front of you ,know that you'll have a tough afternoon. McLaren made same mistake so there were four fast cars in the back rows. Certainly we were able to provide some entertainment to the audience because practically in every lap we saw a duel. In this way, race is going on quickly and almost could not believe it when I saw the checkered flag. Oposite, when you are on the front then the race appears to be much more longer. But, even though I enjoyed at Sepang, I would certainly have preferred if the race had seemed very long!"

Always try to think positive. I heard on Sunday night that Red Bull is clearly the best car. It true that they were in the front row in qualifying and two teams that could beat them were in the back of the grid. Now I'm back home in Monaco with the family. Apart from the next trip to China, this will be my base for most of next month. For my son this was the first real long trip out of Brazil and we needed time to get used to the new time zone.

Ferrari with F-duct system very soon

At Maranello, Ferrari engineers are working to emulate the innovation brought by McLaren, the so called F-duct system that allow to drivers, with the push on a button with his knee, to gain more speed. Sauber in Melbourne led to the track a similar solution and Red Bull, Force India, Williams and Mercedes are working on similar systems.
Stefano Domenicali said on Sunday that Ferrari is preparing new version of the F10 car. "We saw that advantage of this system is very, very big. So we will be racing with it as soon as possible, once we are certain that 100% works.
