BMW i8 Concept with Laser Headlight at the 2011On Frankfurt Motor Show
The BMW i8 Concept has made its world debut at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show. The i8 Concept is the evolution of the Vision Dynamic Concept shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. The i8 Concept offers sustainable vehicle production with carbon reinforced plastic (CRP) over aluminum construction. While recent cars use LED headlight for the efficiency, the i8 Concept uses the laser headlight. BMW stated that the i8 will set the new benchmark on the performance segment.
The BMW i8 Concept looks very futuristic which is inspired by a plug-in hybrid sports car. The exterior features the clear glass door and sculpted, flowing body work.
The i8 is not a pure electric like the i3, but an all-wheel-drive plug-in hybrid. The powertrain consists of: a three-cylinder gasoline engine driving the rear axle, an electric motor driving the front wheels and computerized system that can work together or independently. BMW claims that the i8 can sprint from 0 to 62 mph in 5.9 second and has the limited top speed of 155 mph. In normal driving, the i8 should be able to return the fuel economy of 80 mpg.
The BMW i8 Concept is expected to be released for the market in 2014 as the 2015 year model.
